The Road Ahead

Thursday, January 17-18, 2002

In January 2002, the "First Building Bridges Seminar: The Road Ahead" was held at Lambeth Palace, the London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, to discuss a wide range of issues in Muslim-Christian dialogue in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Forty leading Muslim and Christian scholars attended this two day seminar, which provided a platform for open and honest discussion. Opening remarks were delivered by then-Archbishop George Carey, Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan, and then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair. A record of this seminar was published as The Road Ahead: A Christian-Muslim Dialogue (2002) and is available in PDF form, provided by Georgetown University Press.

About George Carey

Lord George Carey of Clifton is president of the United Church Schools Trust and United Learning. He is also a presentation fellow of King’s College London, fellow of Christ’s University College, Canterbury, and fellow at the U.S. Library of Congress. Carey was enthroned as the one hundred and third archbishop of Canterbury in 1991. After his 2002 retirement he was chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire until 2010 and also served as president of the London School of Theology. From 2004 to 2010 he was co-chair of the World Economic Forum's Council of 100 Leaders, promoting understanding and dialogue between the Western and Islamic worlds. Carey has served as chair of the trustees of the World Faiths Development Dialogue since April 2003. His publications include The Gate of Glory (1992), Why I Believe in a Personal God: The Credibility of Faith in a Doubting Culture (2000), the autobiographical Know the Truth: A Memoir (2004), and We Don’t Do God (2012, with son Andrew Carey).
