Ayman Shabana

Profile

Ayman Shabana is an associate research professor at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Q). Prior to joining SFS-Q, he taught at institutions including the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and Florida International University. His teaching and research interests include Islamic legal history, Islamic law and ethics, human rights, and bioethics. He is the director of the Islamic Bioethics Project, which has been supported by three consecutive grants from Qatar National Research Fund’s National Priorities Research Program. In 2012 he received the Research Excellence Award at the Qatar Annual Research Forum and during the academic year 2013-2014 he was a visiting research fellow at Harvard Law School's Islamic Legal Studies Program. He is the author of Custom in Islamic Law and Legal Theory (2010). He received his Ph.D. from UCLA, his M.A. from Leiden University in the Netherlands, and his B.A. from al-Azhar University in Egypt.
